In February this year we welcomed two incredible students from PASS Edinburgh College on placement with us. Here are their reflections of their time at hidden route…
Lauren Shedden
In February 2021 I worked with Gemma and Lisa and the ensemble at hidden route, assisting towards their production of 'Bad Bored Women of the Rooms', as part of my Applied Theatre placement with Edinburgh College and Kingston University towards my BA(Hons) Dance and Drama.
Working with the ensemble was a truly inspiring experience to observe and be a part of, particularly given the current climate within the COVID-19 pandemic. They continue to approach their work with passion, excitement and persistence to still be collaborating virtually and coming up with innovative ways to problem solve and make the most of this new way in which we are creating work.
Gemma and Lisa were also wonderful to learn from and have as support throughout my own facilitation, and I am excited for this connection to progress further beyond my work with them on placement.
Overall, my time with hidden route was an experience I feel so lucky to have had during my training, and I look forward to further utilising and progressing what I have learned into my professional practice ongoing.

The young company were an absolute joy to work with. I had no idea what to expect coming into that (virtual) room, but their energy and enthusiasm made me feel like I had already been there!
When observing their weekly session, I was impressed at the amount of captivating work they could create in such a short amount of time. This gave me great confidence in my upcoming workshop as I knew how committed the group were.
Overall, my placement at hidden route has been an extremely rewarding experience. The workshop proved to be a success from the positive responses, and I am feeling very grateful for the young company’s effort and bravery.
I have left feeling a lot more confident in my ability to lead a workshop, and have received valuable insights into how the company operates as a whole.
After meeting both companies and seeing little teasers of their work, I can’t wait to see the wonderful things that hidden route come out with this year!
